Correct use of crutches
Correct use of crutches
It is said that crutches are the "third leg" of a person. In addition to the elderly who have weak legs and mobility problems, when we have lower limb injuries or after surgery, we also need to use crutches to walk.
In fact, not all of us know how to use them, and some of us have even suffered secondary injuries due to incorrect use of crutches. Here is how to use crutches correctly. (*The following movement instructions are for the right leg of the affected leg.)
1、Walking with double crutches
Support the crutches in front of both sides of the body, straighten the elbows, support the weight with both hands, and move the crutches forward.
Then move the right leg forward to between the crutches, then move the left leg forward to the front of the crutches, repeat the action to walk forward!
2、Walking with one crutch
We have to use the left hand to hold the cane, crutches and the right affected leg first to move forward, the body's centre of gravity to move to the position of the crutches, and then the left leg to step forward, repeat the action to walk forward.
It is important to note here that the single crutch must be used on the opposite side of the affected leg!
Many people subconsciously think, I have a bad right leg on the right side of the crutch, which is actually wrong!
3、Double crutches on the stairs
When you are ready to go up the stairs, approach the bottom stair first and hold a crutch in each hand while supporting it.
Move your left leg up one flight of stairs first and put your weight on your left leg.
Then move the crutches and the right affected leg up to the same level of stairs, stand firmly and then continue up the stairs, do not rush.
4、Double crutches down the stairs
When you are ready to go down the stairs, approach the edge of the stairs first and hold a crutch in each hand while supporting it.
Move your crutches to the next step of the stairs, then follow with your right leg.
After both hands to support the stability, the centre of gravity down, and then move the left leg to the next step of the stairs, stand stable and then continue to go down the stairs, do not rush.
